Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first woman to grab it twice in a row.

As Barça’s captain, she led them to their first Champions League trophy in 2021, winning against Chelsea 4-0 in the final and scoring a penalty.

That season, she banged in 26 goals as a midfielder, which is something out of the norm!

Even after an ACL injury in 2022, she still guided Barça to a domestic treble, winning all 30 league games.

AITANA BONMATÍ (2023, 2024)

Aitana Bonmatí won the Ballon d’Or in 2023 after leading Barça to Liga F and Champions League titles, plus starring in Spain’s World Cup victory, where she was named the tournament’s best player.

In 2024, she did it again, helping Barça win a historic quadruple…Liga F, UCL, Copa de la Reina, and Supercopa.

A year later, in 2025, after reaching the women’s UEFA Champions League final and winning the EURO, where she was named Player of the Tournament, she claimed her third Ballon d’Or, becoming the female footballer with the most Ballon d’Or titles.

She scored 19 goals and had 18 assists in 2023/24, including a goal in the Champions League final.

A BIT ABOUT THE WOMEN’S BALLON D’OR

The Women’s Ballon d’Or, or Ballon d’Or Féminin, kicked off in 2018, created by France Football to celebrate the best female footballer each year.

Unlike the men’s award, which started in 1956, the women’s version is newer but just as big a deal.

It’s voted on by a panel of international journalists who judge players based on three main criteria: individual performance (goals, assists, and overall impact), team success (trophies won with club and country), and fair play (sportsmanship and conduct).

The award covers the European football season, typically from August to May, and is announced at a glitzy ceremony in Paris.

Since its start, the Women’s Ballon d’Or has shone a spotlight on women’s football, which has grown massively in popularity.

The first winner was Ada Hegerberg in 2018, followed by Megan Rapinoe in 2019.

Then FC Barcelona took over, with Alexia Putellas winning in 2021 and 2022, and Aitana Bonmatí in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Alexia made history as the first woman to win back-to-back awards, and Aitana matched that feat with her own consecutive wins.

For context, Lyon has one win (Hegerberg), and no other club has more than one.
